West Nipissing Bylaw Officers Using Unauthorized Drones, CAO Orders Immediate Halt

Last week, it was revealed that bylaw enforcement officers in West Nipissing had been using drones for investigations without proper authorization. This practice came to light when a resident reported drone use on their property. In Canada, drones must be operated by licensed and trained individuals, and their use by municipalities typically requires public consultations and council approval.

The town’s CAO, Jay Barbeau, confirmed that drones had been used in at least one investigation and to monitor illegal encampments, but stressed that this was done without municipal sanction.

Barbeau has since ordered the cessation of drone use. The incident has raised concerns about privacy and potential legal liabilities. Many residents are calling for public accountability and further clarification from the city or council.
