At least 39 people stuck underground at Totten Mine in Sudbury, Ont.

SUDBURY –

At least 39 people are stuck underground at Vale’s Totten Mine in Sudbury, Ont., Monday, CTV News has learned.

Nick Larochelle, president of Steelworkers Local 6500, told CTV’s Lyndsay Aelick there are 39 people still underground, including 32 Steelworkers members.

Situated in Worthington, 40 kilometres west of Vale’s Copper Cliff complex, Totten Mine opened in 2014 and employs about 200 people, according to Vale’s website.

It’s still unknown how long the miners have been stuck underground, or the cause.

Vale has yet to respond to the ongoing incident, and more details are expected soon. This story will be updated as soon as we have more information.
