OPP APPREHEND FLEEING MOTORCYCLE DRIVER

(WEST NIPISSING, ON) – On August 22, 2020 at 10:15 a.m., members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to stop a motorcycle travelling at an extremely high rate of speed (in excess of 170 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone) on Highway 17 in the Municipality of West Nipissing (Verner) but the driver failed to stop for police and fled.

Officers continued to patrol the area and subsequently located the motorcycle, abandoned at the dead-end of Leclair Road in Verner.

The OPP Canine Unit (K9), OPP Emergency Response Team (ERT) and the OPP Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) were deployed to assist. At 11:35 a.m., the OPP K9 Unit located the accused hiding in the bush and he was arrested. The driver was not injured.

As a result of the investigation, the 18-year-old driver, from Sudbury, was charged with the following:

Fail to Stop for Police, contrary to section 216(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt- Excessive Speed, contrary to section 172(1) of the HTA;
Careless Driving, contrary to section 130(1) of the HTA;
Use Plate not Authorized for Vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the HTA;
Fail to Apply for Permit on Becoming Owner, contrary to section 11(2) of the HTA; and
Operate a Motor Vehicle Without Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on October 26, 2020 in Sturgeon Falls.
