(WEST NIPISSING, ON) – On April 3, 2020, members of the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an assault with a weapon incident that occurred on Highway 17, east of Jocko Point Road and that the suspects had left the scene heading westbound on Highway 17.
With the assistance of officers from North Bay Police Service and Anishinabek Police Service, the vehicle and occupants were located on Highway 17, Municipality of West Nipissing, where a high risk traffic stop was conducted.
Investigation revealed none of the involved persons were injured. Officers did seize a number of weapons along with break-in tools.
As a result of the investigation, three people were arrested.
Valerie DEGAGNE, age 36, and Douglas HYNDS, age 28, both from North Bay, are charged with:
- Assault with a Weapon, contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC; and
- Possession of Break-In Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC.
The first accused, DEGAGNE, was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 9, 2020 in North Bay.
The second accused, HYNDS, was also released by way of an Undertaking but is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 30, 2020 in North Bay.
Ronald LAWRENCE, age 37, from North Bay is charged with:
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC; and
- Possession of Break-In Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC.
The accused was released by way of an Undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on June 9, 2020 in North Bay.
