On January 11, 2020, members from the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Third Street in Sturgeon Falls.
Investigation revealed the driver had a suspended licence and was wanted on several outstanding warrants.
Further investigation revealed the plates attached to the vehicle were not authentic and the vehicle had been reported stolen. All three occupants were arrested.
Police located and seized break-in tools, a quantity of stolen personal identification documents and credit cards along with key fobs for various vehicles, falsified plates, prescription drugs, suspected to be Ativan and Canadian currency.
The driver, Matthew SUMMERS, age 31, from Field, Ontario was charged with:
- Fail to Comply with Recognizance (seven counts), contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code (CC);
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order (three counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC;
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC;
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000 (three counts), contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC;
- Possession Break In Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC;
- Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Other Drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA); and
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC.
The two passengers were released unconditionally.
While investigating this matter, officers learned that one of the passengers had provided them with a false name.
On January 12, 2020 at 11:20 p.m., officers located and arrested that passenger, in Sturgeon Falls.
Jennifer RENAUD, age 37, from Field, is charged with:
- Fail to Comply with Recognizance (five counts), contrary to section 145(3) of the (CC);
- Obstruct Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC;
- Personation with Intent to Avoid Arrest, contrary to section 403(1)(d) of the CC;
- Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance – Other Drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA;
- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC;
- Possession Break In Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the CC;
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000 (three counts), contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC; and
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC;
Both accused persons were held in custody and are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice – Bail Court in North Bay on January 23, 2020.
