The groundbreaking ceremony took place Thursday at noon and was witnessed by more than 75 people, including community leaders, parishioners and media.

Parishioners have been attending mass in the cafeteria at Franco Cite for the past two years after an engineering report deemed the church building was unsafe. The cost to repair the church was estimated in the millions.“Losing our church broke a lot of hearts,” said Yvon Marleau, chairman of the parish council and a member of the construction committee.

“Most understood what had to be done, but some didn’t. It was a historical building that existed in this community for more than 100 years.”Marleau said he hopes parishioners return once the doors to the new church open.
