Northern MPPs to form committee at Queen’s Park

TIMMINS – Members of the Ontario Legislature have unanimously endorsed a motion to create a committee of legislature comprised entirely of Northern MPPs.

The Private Member’s motion was introduced last week by MPP John Vanthof (NDP — Timiskaming-Cochrane).

“The purpose of this all-party Northern Ontario committee would be to ensure that any proposed government legislation or policies would be scrutinized in terms to its potential impacts on Northern Ontario,” Vanthof explained in a release.

Fellow New Democrat MPP Gilles Bisson (NDP — Timmins-James Bay) said the Liberals and opposition parties all expressed support for the idea — now, it’s up to the government to implement it.

Bisson said the idea of this regional committee had been kicked around and recommended by Northern MPPs in the past.

This time, the idea gained traction from all parties.
